Chewing gum can obviously lead to migraines. But why? Often chewing gum contains also the sweetener aspartame. Aspartame is known to damage nerve cells sustainable. Anyone who suffers from migraines and has previously often chewed sugar-free chewing gum, so once the sample should dare put the rule and never use chewing gum.
Do no chew gums if you suffer from migraines
Migraines could have a very simple cause, as Dr. Nathan Watemberg of Tel Aviv University found in some people. He noticed that most of his underage patients with chronic migraine chew gum in excess, namely up to six hours a day. Then he asked for a month this refrain: The symptoms disappeared. Chewing gum off – Migraine away
After a month without gum nineteen of the study participants reported that their symptoms have disappeared completely, seven more felt significant improvements in frequency and intensity of pain. Twenty-six of the children and young people were willing to start again shortly for testing purposes with gum chewing the end of the month. The symptoms returned within a few days.
Dr. Watemberg mentions two possible explanations for these results: an overuse of the temporomandibular joint and the sweetener aspartame. The joint that connects upper and lower jaws together is called a temporomandibular joint and is the most frequently used joints in the body. Aspartame: A migraine triggers?
Another factor that may contribute to the damaging effect of the chewing gum, the sweetener aspartame, the sweetened chewing gum is often, but also soft drinks and many diets or light products.bAlready in 1989, US scientists presented in a study of nearly two hundred participants found that aspartame can trigger migraines. Nearly ten percent of the subjects reported that consumption of aspartame in them would lead to a migraine attack.
Such an attack usually lasts one to three days, but in some cases, they may last longer than ten days. In another US study from 1994 also showed that aspartame could increase the frequency of migraine attacks by about ten percent.
Aspartame attacks nerve cells
Headache disorders such as migraines are neurological disorders, so are related to the nervous system. In a scientific work of the Polish University of Life Sciences in the year 2013, the researchers involved, such as concrete aspartame may cause damage to the central nervous system showed. The sweetener is metabolized in bodies to phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol.
